How this is calculated
The scheme’s table
₹100 a month for 5 years at 6.7% = ₹7,136.58
- The National Savings Recurring Deposit Scheme, 2019 pays at maturity the amount its table gives for a ₹100 account; other amounts are in proportion (para 9(1)), and the total is rounded to the rupee (para 9(3)).
- That table amount is each deposit growing with interest added every quarter until maturity: the sum of 100 × (1 + r)m ÷ 3, r = the rate ÷ 400, m = the months a deposit is in. It reproduces the scheme’s own table: ₹7,136.58 for accounts opened from 1 October 2023 at 6.7%.
Assumptions
- All 60 deposits are made on time, with no advance deposits.
- The account runs to maturity. Closing early, missed deposits and continuing after maturity are not covered.
- Tax on the interest is not included.
Is it worked out the same way as a bank RD?
Yes: interest is added every quarter, and the RD calculator uses the same method at your bank’s rate. What differs is that the post office sets the rate for each quarter and the term is 5 years.
How much do I have to deposit?
At least ₹100 a month, in multiples of ₹10, the same amount every month for 60 months (paras 5(1) to 5(4)).
When does the rate change?
The Ministry of Finance announces the rate for each quarter. The rate when you open the account applies for the whole term.
