Post office time deposit interest rates
For deposits made from 1 October to 31 December 2026, set by the Ministry of Finance. The rate on the day you open the account stays till maturity. Interest on ₹1 lakh.
| Tenure | Rate a year | Interest a year | Interest in all |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 6.9% | ₹7,081 | ₹7,081 |
| 2 years | 7% | ₹7,186 | ₹14,372 |
| 3 years | 7.1% | ₹7,291 | ₹21,873 |
| 5 years | 7.5% | ₹7,714 | ₹38,570 |
How this is calculated
The formula
Interest a year = deposit × ((1 + r)4 − 1)
- r = the rate % a year ÷ 400: one quarter’s interest. Interest is compounded every quarter and paid at the end of each year (National Savings Time Deposit Scheme, 2019, para 7(2)).
- Each year’s interest is rounded to the rupee: 50 paise or more counts as a rupee, less is dropped (para 7(3)).
- Interest left in the account earns nothing more (para 7(7)), so every year pays the same, and the deposit comes back at the end.
Assumptions
- The deposit stays to the end. Closing early, which the scheme allows on its own terms, and extending the account are not covered.
- Each year’s interest is paid out; you may have it credited to your post office savings account.
- Tax on the interest is not included.
Why do some calculators show more interest?
They add each quarter’s interest to the deposit for the whole term: ₹1 lakh for 5 years at 7.5% would then come to ₹1,44,995. Under the scheme the interest is paid at the end of each year, and interest you leave in the account earns nothing more, so ₹1 lakh pays ₹7,714 a year: ₹38,570 in all, with the deposit back at the end.
Is there a higher rate for senior citizens?
No. The scheme sets one rate for each tenure, whoever opens the account.
When do the rates change?
The Ministry of Finance announces the rates for each quarter. The rate on the day you open the account applies till maturity (para 7(4)), so a later change does not affect a deposit you already have.
